Gaza 2023-2024
OTO 76/62 Super Rapid Gun
Leonardo is the manufacturer of the OTO 76/62 Super Rapido Multi-Feeding naval gun, a lightweight, rapid-fire naval gun, that is installed on the Israeli Navy warships Sa'ar 4.5, Sa'ar 5, and Sa'ar 6 which have been used for military assaults and enforcing the illegal naval blockade of Gaza.
In September 2022, the company delivered the Israeli Navy with four 76/62 naval guns that were installed on board of the Sa’ar 6 warships. These later took part in an Israeli attack on Gaza in October 2023, in their first operational use. The Israeli military carried out the attack from the Mediterranean Sea toward the besieged Gaza. The guns were ordered in 2016 from the company in an estimated amount of USD 100 million, funded by U.S. foreign military aid.
According to the Israeli military, by May 2024 the 76/62 cannons had become an active part of the military's attacks. The naval gun is largely comprised of advanced electronic systems, including a fire control system that can guide the projectile and allow it to accurately hit small and distant targets at a rate of over 100 rounds per minute.
The Israeli Navy is one of the first worldwide users of the 76/62 naval gun and six guns have been in use since 1973 on board the Navy’s Sa'ar 4.5 class missile boats. The guns can be integrated with Leonardo’s multifunctional ammunition and Vulcano-guided ammunition.
Iron Fist System
Leonardo's fully owned subsidiary, RADA Electronic Industries (NASDAQ: RADA), provides its software-defined Compact Hemispheric Radars (CHR) for Elbit Systems’ Iron Fist system.
Elbit Systems' 'Iron Fist' (Porcupine Arrow) is an autonomous active defense system developed against anti-tank threats, used in the Eitan armored personnel carrier (APC) and the Caterpillar D9 bulldozers, which took part in the ground invasion of Gaza. The system was entered into operational use during the Israeli ground invasion of Gaza in October 2023.
RADA worked closely with Elbit Systems for over a decade on developing and testing the Iron Fist and its radar capabilities.
Heavy Duty Tank Trailers for the Israeli Military
In December 2023, Leonardo’s subsidiary, DRS Sustainment Systems, was awarded a USD 15.37 million firm-fixed-price contract for heavy-duty tank trailers to the Israeli military. The contract is funded by U.S. Foreign Military Sales funds for Israel and is estimated to be completed in December 2026.
Aircrafts for the Israeli Air Force
Leonardo is the supplier of the Israeli Air Force's M-346 and AW119Kx training aircraft.
“Lavi” M-346 Aircraft
In 2012, the Israeli Ministry of Defense purchased 30 M-346 aircraft worth USD 2 billion.
The deal was signed as part of a reciprocal purchase agreement between the governments of Israel and Italy, according to which, in exchange for purchasing the 30 training aircrafts, the Italian Ministry of Defense purchased two warning aircraft and an observation satellite with advanced systems from Israel Aerospace Industries for NIS 4 billion.
As of December 31, 2023, total liabilities for the agreement, including financing costs, were estimated at approximately EUR 721 million. The remaining liability is approximately EUR 361 million and is expected to be repaid by 2032.
In 2014, the first M-346 aircraft was delivered to the IMOD and was nicknamed "Lavi". In August of the same year, the Israeli Air Force conducted the first training flight of the Lavi aircraft.
In June 2016, a representative of the Israeli military visited the company’s facility in Varese, Italy for the delivery of the remaining aircraft.
The Lavi aircraft is used to train fighter pilots in the Israeli Air Force in the advanced stage of the pilot course. The training aircraft is used for training air combat, strike flights and operational deep strikes. The aircraft allows training in advanced radar and weapon systems, and command and control and electronic warfare systems, such as those found in the F-16, the F-15 and the F-35.
In June 2023, Leonardo announced that it would upgrade the 'Lavi' M-346 training aircraft in the Israeli Air Force to an attack aircraft. The company will install a NEXTER 20 mm cannon on the plane to provide improved air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities, thus turning it into a light combat aircraft.
Elbit Systems provides the Israeli Air Force with maintenance services for Leonardo's Lavi training aircraft. As part of the contract between Leonardo and the IMOD, Elbit Systems, whose participation in the deal was valued at USD 420 million, established a comprehensive set of maintenance services and comprehensive logistical support for the training aircraft, and an advanced ground training system.
AW119KX training helicopters
In February 2019, Leonardo was contracted by the Israeli Ministry of Defense to provide seven AW119KX single-engine helicopters for an estimated amount of USD 157 million. The purchase included a comprehensive training service and integrated training capabilities package, full flight simulators and other training devices, newly built facilities, and support and maintenance for 20 years for the Israeli Air Force flight school. Elbit Systems, which was Leonardo's subcontractor in the project, provides the Israeli Air Force with helicopter maintenance services for a period of 20 years.
In September 2020, the IMOD signed a supplementary agreement for the purchase of an advanced training package from Leonardo that will include five additional AW119KX training helicopters and two trainers for the Israeli Air Force's flight school. In return, the Italian Ministry of Defense will purchase launchers and 'Spike' missiles from Israeli state-owned company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, and advanced trainers and simulators from a company established in partnership between Elbit Systems and Leonardo. This was a follow-up deal to the exchange deal between the governments of Israel and Italy, signed in 2011.
In April 2022, Leonardo was awarded a USD 29 million contract by the U.S. Department of Defense to provide the IMOD with AW119Kx helicopters as part of foreign military sales to Israel.
In July 2024, Leonardo announced the launch of a comprehensive capability enhancement package for the M-346 integrated training system including the aircraft’s core avionics, navigation/identification, mission equipment and ground training capabilities.
Tactical Radar Systems
In June 2023, Leonardo signed a contract with the Israeli Ministry of Defense for the supply of tactical radar systems for vehicles in the amount of approximately NIS 8 million.
Israeli Innovation Authority
In February 2023, Leonardo signed two agreements with the Israeli Innovation Authority and Ramot Tel Aviv University in the field of innovation.
