The Israeli Government Is About to Renew the Electronic Monitor Contract with G4S

On Sunday, 21 April 2013, the Israeli government has approved to prolong the prisoners' electronic monitoring law for another year until May 2014. The government authorized the legislation ministers' committee to submit to the Knesset assembly the final wording of bill and requested an urgent discussion on the matter. Apparently, the electronic monitoring is being carried out by G4S and the American company 3M, despite the fact that the contract with the companies ended in March 2013.

Since 2005, G4S has been providing Israel's prison services with ankle monitors as a custody alternative (among other services - see: G4S Israel). In the end of January 2012 the contract between G4S and the prison service for the ankle monitor project expired. The Israeli government issued a temporary order to lengthen the contract with G4S Israel until June 2012 and later on until March 2013.
