Private Security and Surveillance Technology
This sub-category refers to commercial involvement in Israel’s growing private security and surveillance technology apparatus, including the use of biometric identification systems and other computerized systems of population data collection.
Private security is one of the fastest-growing industries in Israel. The Israeli military and police increasingly rely on innovative surveillance technologies – visual, online, profiling, and behavior prediction - to intimidate, profile, imprison activists, and repress political activity.
Israeli state institutions and the military are increasingly handing over a large number of responsibilities to private security providers. Private security companies increasingly staff checkpoints across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, provide security services to settlements, operate patrol cars and guard entrance and exit gates, and, in the case of occupied East Jerusalem, act as private armed guards to settlers.
